Appalachian Potato Baskets

Simple form meets function in this utilitarian basket, based on a traditional design. It is both beautiful as well as useful.

This style of basket was common in Europe, particularly Britain, and made its way across the Atlantic when settlers began moving to the Americas. Bringing with them their baskets and the knowledge of their construction, the methods have been passed down through the generations and ribbed baskets continue to be popular in the Appalachian region.

Each basket is constructed with a bent oak rim and is handmade using reed/rattan and traditional ribbed basket weaving methods. They are finished with tung oil as a preservative. This allows the sturdy piece to be used for its primitive purpose as a harvest basket. It would be suitable as a yarn basket or serve as beautiful centerpiece fruit basket to complement your farmhouse table. Two 4″ handles make them easy to carry.

Large- English Chestnut: The oval top measures approximately8”x12”, overall length 15”, 8” deep. Stained in a warm chestnut color.
